Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Recovery Roadmap

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel and plays an important role in walking, running, and pushing off the ground. Achilles tendon pain can develop following changes in activity, repetitive loading, sports, tight or weak calf muscles, footwear issues, or changes in foot mechanics.

Treatment may combine a chiropody assessment with custom foot orthotics or appropriate orthopedic footwear when foot mechanics are contributing to tendon stress. Physiotherapy can provide progressive strengthening, mobility work, and return-to-activity guidance. For appropriate persistent Achilles tendon conditions, shockwave therapy may also be recommended. Massage therapy may help address associated calf and lower-leg muscle tension.
